DeAnna of HMV Promotions here! My next band I am interviewing is the Heavy Metal band, Midnite Hellion, from Trenton, NJ.
HMV: Firstly, Hello Midnite Hellion and thank you for allowing me to interview you all .. lol!!
Midnite Hellion: Hey DeAnna, thanks for having us! You’ve got all five of us here!
HMV: Now, who is Midnite Hellion?
Sonny Zackeo: .......Drew, you can do this! Haha!
Drew Rizzo: Haha! Midnite Hellion is a Heavy Metal quintet from Trenton, NJ. Sonny Zackeo soars on the vocals, Amadeus Zajac and Dan Sclavi shred on the guitars, Bill Dripps rounds out the sound on bass, and Drew Rizzo drives the drums.
HMV: When did Midnite Hellion form and how did the name come about?
Amadeus Zajac: As far as I know, Drew came up with it. It strikes me as a merge of "Two Minutes To Midnight" and "The Hellion", both titles of songs by legendary British bands. The band formed this year, no more than a few months back with a slightly different line up.
DR: The band’s first inception started on April 4th, 2011; however, the current lineup was completed as of July 5th 2011 with the addition of Bill. The initial lineup featured Jaron Gulino on bass and vocals, Alex Kulik on guitars, and myself; however, that lineup was short-lived. Alex left shortly afterward to reform his and Jaron’s previous band, which brought in Amadeus and Dan. Jaron stayed for a bit longer until he could no longer commit to two full-time bands, which then brought in Sonny and Bill. The name originated from the first inception of the band, as Jaron and I were tossing around ideas for a while and then Midnite Hellion just clicked perfectly. The two British bands Amadeus just noted are favorites among the current lineup, which was obviously unintentional, but worked out quite nicely in our favor.
HMV: What are some of the band’s influences?
Dan Sclavi: I think as a whole everyone in the band likes traditional heavy metal or NWOBHM. My main influences though center around thrash and some death metal. Some of my favorites include Exodus, Sepultura, Death, Kreator, Venom, Carnivore, Rigor Mortis, Onslaught, Bolt Thrower, and Metal Church, to name a few.
SZ: Well, singer wise, I have a few favorites. Ray Gillen, Eric Martin, Tony Martin and John Sykes, for their originality and styles. But, I have my ultimate favorites. I always thought of it like this - Bruce Dickinson made me want to be a singer. Michael Kiske made me want to take lessons, and Ronnie James Dio made me want to sing with feeling and emotion.
AZ: Speaking for myself only; my personal influences come from various sub-genres within metal and some even from other musical styles. Every project that I have been involved with had been its own entity. The inspiration cannot not only from oneself, but also from the other members. With that in mind, certain musical influences tend to come out more than others depending on the nature of the project itself. My writing for Midnite Hellion is more influenced by bands like Mercyful Fate, Motorhead, Kat, Sodom, Slayer, early Iron Maiden, Venom, and to a much lesser extent by various bands of the Tampa death metal scene.
Bill Dripps: As far as metal goes, my main influences stem from NWOBHM. Iron Maiden, and particularly Steve Harris, has had an enormous impact on my playing and writing. I’m a big fan of Judas Priest, Saxon, Tygers of Pan Tang, Diamond Head, Avenger, Blitzkrieg, Virtue and Demon, just to name a few.
DR: Too many to list!! I’ve always been into Rock ‘n Roll in one form or another, and I’ve been extremely influenced by the 80’s Thrash Metal and NWOBHM movements, as well as the first wave of Death Metal, although the latter doesn’t play much of a role in my current playing. Some key bands for me are OverKill, Motorhead, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, King Diamond and Mercyful Fate, Accept, and The Scorpions.
HMV: Has everyone in the band known each other for some time?
AZ: Yeah, for the most part. Drew and I played in another local act together for a number of years, Dan and I played together in a joke band, I’ve known Bill for quite some time, and just recently met Sonny when he responded to one of our ads. I have to say though, the chemistry we all have as musicians is great and I expect lots of good things to come.
DS: Zajac, Drew, and I have known each other for some time, I met Bill a few Years back, and Sonny two months ago.
BD: I met Drew and Amadeus essentially through another band that they’d played in for some time, and I came to know Dan by going to their shows. Sonny I had just met as soon as I joined the band, which was only about a month ago, but the overall dynamic between everyone is a friendly one.
SZ: All the guys have known each other for quite some time. I am the "newbie" which is funny because I am the oldest one in the group. I can tell you that I feel as comfortable with these guys that I have known for a short time as I do with some of my closest friends. That, to me, is one of the most important things when forming a band, how everyone gets along. You need to like the people you play with or you're not going to have fun, or be productive.
DR: Sonny is the newcomer to our circle! Otherwise, we have all known each other for quite some time. I’ve known both Amadeusz and Dan since about 2005 and Amadeusz and I have been playing together since 2006. Bill and I have known each other for about two years now.
HMV: What made you get into music?
SZ: I can honestly say that I never got into music for the girls. Sure, that was a fantastic by-product but that wasn’t the sole reason. I certainly didn’t get into it for the money! HAHA! But, I grew up at a time when bands were talented and put on stage shows and dressed up, bands like Iron Maiden, Helloween, etc. Not glam, mind you, but actually put on a production so that the fans that came to see them got their money’s worth. They came away from the show feeling that they saw something special, that they were part of something special. I was always infatuated with the concept of playing to thousands of people, all of whom have different backgrounds and come from all over, to congregate in on location to see a band that they all like. Being able to make music and reach all sorts of people all over the world is incomprehensible to some degree. Music makes up the fabric of most people’s lives. When a person is happy, sad, upset, excited, there is usually a song that embodies that moment in their life. To be able to create music that fits that would be my ultimate goal. That and seeing people that you never met singing along to words that you wrote is probably the most incredible feeling on the planet.
AZ: Honestly? I was in high-school and needed a hobby, I guess. I didn't really take it all that seriously but it beat playing video games. It wasn’t until my first serious band in 2007 that I came to appreciate it as anything more than just a hobby. People involved in the local musical scene have a way of connecting with each other. Playing shows with other local bands creates a social circle and a lifestyle that is one of a kind.
BD: I think some people are just born to be musically inclined, as I would demand that Dark Side of the Moon and Machine Head (Deep Purple) be played to me over and over before I was old enough to be able to reach the stereo in my parent’s house. I took piano lessons for a very brief period, and actually enjoyed practicing, because I thought the idea of reading a piece of paper and translating that into a tune you can hear was intriguing. I listened to copious amounts of classic rock as a kid, and I liked all the emotion you could feel from the music, from a dark or melancholy chord change, or a soulful bluesy groove, to just a tasty, euphoric melody, whether it was sung or played. I figured if someone else could do that, I could. So I got a bass, and the rest is history.
DR: My parents got me into music; hell, my earliest memories are listening to my parents’ record collection! The Who and Black Sabbath were my first introductions to Heavy Metal, but I couldn’t get enough of the 60’s and 70’s bands. My mother loved The Beatles when she was growing up, and my father was big into The Who. My father also is the one responsible for showing me Mercyful Fate and Metallica when I was two – a local college radio station had a DJ that only played Metal, and both bands were regulars in the rotation. The Jimi Hendrix Experience was another early favorite – I would demand to hear the “Are You Experienced?” record and sat there looking at the album cover and taking it all in. For my fifth birthday, my parents gave me a video from The Who and a Sears toy drum set, and that sealed my fate!
HMV: Is there an album out there? If not, when can we expect one to come out?
AZ: Hah! No. Give it a while.
BD: I enjoy doing some amateur recording work on my own, so we’re working on a pre-production demo. That will likely just end up essentially being a practice run to work things out before we hit the studio to record the EP.
DR: The EP is going to be recorded in the fall and will be released by Metal Mantra Records with worldwide distribution through Pure Steel Records. Metal Mantra Records is owned by two of our friends from another local band, Power Theory, and their guitarist, Bob Ballinger, will be co-producing the EP.
HMV: Does the band play locally or are there out of state shows that you guys do? Any upcoming shows in the near future for your fans to go see?
DR: We have our two debut shows in the upcoming months, the first being in Kearny, NJ on September 22nd supporting the Blackout American US 2011 Tour featuring Rattlehead and Kaustik. The show will also include local bands, and friends, Regalia and Condition Critical. Afterward, we will make our hometown debut in Trenton supporting the America Torn Asunder Tour, featuring Warbringer, Lazarus A.D., Landmine Marathon, and Diamond Plate on October 17th.
DS: I would love to play in NYC in the very near future. You can see all upcoming shows at http://www.midnitehellion.com.
HMV: What is your favorite venue to play?
SZ: Clubs with enough room for everyone, and that have good PA systems and sound guys.
BD: Dive bars.
DS: I prefer a smaller venue, usually at a bar. It's not really so much the place for me, but the people that are there. If the people that go to that venue suck, then that venue will suck as well.
AZ: I like venues that treat you good and allow you to have fun. It’s not always about the payment or size of the venue; it depends a lot on the people running the show and the crowd. There have been many venues I liked, and some I didn't. I have a special place in my heart for Championships Bar and Grill in Trenton. I've played many shows there, and went to see many acts as well. The place has done much good for the local scene.
DR: L’amour – The Rock Capital of Brooklyn!!! Sadly, they shut their doors forever years ago, but I had the privilege of performing on the stage where many of my idols have played. There was always something special and memorable about each trip out there, whether it was to perform or to just see a show, but I’ll never forget those times. Regarding active venues, The Bowery Electric in Manhattan, The Acheron in Brooklyn, Crocodile Rock Café in Allentown, PA, and of course our local stop, Championship Bar & Grill in Trenton, are some of my favorites.
HMV: What is the best Midnite Hellion moment that you can share with the readers?!?!?!
SZ: Well, for me the best Midnite Hellion moment was when I initially met the guys at the studio. I only had a quick sample of their style. Once they started playing, I knew right away that this was what I was looking for and what I would be able to bring to the group. I started making up some lyrics and melodies on the spot and it all seemed very natural and comfortable. After that first meeting I learned that all the guys have the same background as me, as far as style and liking and disliking the same types of music. It’s pretty amazing when you realize right away that there is magic in the air at your first meeting! Imagine what a few months might bring!
AZ: So far? The fact that we have formed a full lineup and that we have ambitions. It seems that everyone in the band is taking the project seriously and is not afraid to contribute. I think we're all fairly open-minded, easy-going motherfuckers as well, and things have been very comfortable so far.
DS: Probably when Bill came to practice for the first time, and I knew then we had a full line up of members that are dedicated to the band.
DR: The best moments are yet to come, but I’ve gotta say, just playing with these guys is the most excellent time I’ve ever had in a band! We’re definitely a band of brothers, we hang out together, we go to shows together, just a total one for all spirit and attitude with everybody. Also, getting the support from friends and promoters, who are also friends as well, from Wendigo Productions, Signature Riff, Nice Guy Bookings, All Over Booking, and Duff’s Presents that I’ve worked with in the recent past in previous bands is a really great feeling! Every time I see them, they are constantly asking about when we’ll be available to perform, when they can hear the tunes, when they can get some merchandise, etc.
HMV: Onto a more serious note, where does Midnite Hellion see itself as a band in 5 or even 10 years?
SZ: On a shorter goal, let’s say five years, I would say that we are looking to grab an initial fan base that longs for the metal/thrash sound that is not so readily available anymore. Then, increasing that fan base through word of mouth and exposure.
DS: I would love to tour the States and to tour Europe.
AZ: Hopefully still trucking. That's all you can ever really expect in this business.
DR: Music is definitely something that we all have a deep passion for, and the band has a five person strong core, and is like-minded and wants to achieve the same goal. Growing up, it’s every kid’s dream that’s into music to play Madison Square Garden, and honestly, I would be honored to perform as just an opening act there! With Midnite Hellion, the sky is the limit and we have everything on our side, including friends, family, promoters, and time. We have enough material in formative stages to complete a full-length release with some left for a second release, so I’d say in five to ten years, we should have multiple full-length releases under our belts as well as tours.
HMV: What should fans expect from a Midnite Hellion show?
SZ: Fans should expect an exciting show. I feel I can speak for the guys by saying that we are all very much into the music we are playing and music in general. We not only enjoy playing but are true fans. We don’t write songs that are easy to play or that would "sell." We write songs that we find interesting and fun and enjoyable to play and listen to. Our attitude is like this - we want a gathering of our closest "friends" to get together in one place and we want to say,”Hey! You guys wanna have some fun? Well, check this out!!!” We all greatly look forward to playing our best and giving our all and meeting people afterwards. If one person comes up to me and says "hey man, I liked the show; that was good," then my mission is accomplished. That one comment will make my night.
AZ: Hopefully, a great, energetic and an exciting performance in the form of dirty, ball-busting, heavy metal.
HMV: One word, how would your fans describe Midnite Hellion?
BD: We have fans?!?
AZ: Hahaha! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!
SZ: Dedicated
