MIDNITE HELLION - include demos on cassette!
Interview by Daniel Müller
Not too long ago I got sent by a good friend, Dirk Niggemann of Else's Metal Mailorder, a cool U.S. Metal demo that was limited to only 100 copies and is officially sold out. With Dirk, there are a few copies left. Otherwise Midnite Hellion knows but in this country do not sow. That is about to change!
Daniel: Hi Drew! How are you? I usually always first identify the initial question about all your publications. But since you have so far only a demo tape ("The Fever") out there, but the superfluous. How did you come at all came together as a band?
Drew: Hey Daniel! All is well here in the States! I hope with you in Germany it is so! The band was formed in April 2011. But it was only in July 2011 we had a stable occupation. All the members have known each other for years and live quite close to each other. It was only a matter of time before we are all together would form a band.
Daniel: Who were your main musical influences (along with Iron Maiden, of course, but more on that later ...)?
Drew Rizzo: I was mainly influenced by the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, Thrash Metal, Traditional Metal and Death Metal. Besides Maiden still Judas Priest, Overkill, Carnivore and Mercyful Fate / King Diamond is one of my favorites.
Dan Sclavi: I listen to mostly thrash like Exodus and Overkill. But who does not love the classics like Mercyful Fate, Judas Priest and Iron Maiden? These bands may well every metalhead.
Bill Dripps: I hear a lot of bands of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, such as Saxon, Tygers Of Pan Tang, Diamond Head, etc., but also older bands like Deep Purple and UFO.
Daniel: What are your lyrics deal?
Dan: Our lyrics are about horror ride through history to the motorcycle.
Daniel: On "The Fever" you did play "Invaders" by Iron Maiden. Although I know many people who watch "The Number Of The Beast" as the best Maiden album. But little of them like "Invaders". Why this song?
Dan: Maiden have never played this song live. Therefore, we have decided to do that. It is also on the demo landed because it during live performances in the audience always well received.
Daniel: Today it is unusual to release only demos on cassette. I personally hate CD-Rs and MP3s. How important is it for you to get this old, iconic format alive?
Drew: We're just like you! We grew up with physical carriers and even collectors. So we wanted to get this format alive. For us, demos on cassette. Why we have also done so.
Dan: For us this is very important! All the bands we listen to, play old school metal. They have also released their demos then. We wanted to show people just what is at stake here.
Daniel: The demo does not own production, but is factory made. How did it come to this that you found a proper label?
Bill: Apart from the factory cassette it is actually a self-production, which we ourselves have taken in hand.
Dan: The demo was produced by Bill alone on four tracks in his home.
Drew: Our good friend Brian Varney is a master of his craft. I met him when I played with my old band as support for Tyrant and October 31 in New York. When we recorded the demo, I asked him if he would make us a cassette version. He then said that he with Hel's Trash Industries wanted to found a branch of Paragon Records, which brings out only cassettes. And he offered us that we would be his first band on this label. One thing led to another. And now he also takes on even our merchandise.
Daniel: On your website is that the demo is already sold. In Germany there is still distributed by a longtime friend of mine, Dirk Niggemann of Else's Metal Mailorder, who also stock which. Is he still the first point of contact for this?
Drew: Yes, Dirk is at the moment of contact when you get "The Fever" will! But there is also a small shop of Wendigo Records in New York, where you can also get our t-shirts and the Steel And Fire sales in the United States.
Daniel: How did you ever come into contact with Dirk? I mean, Germany is also not for you just around the corner ...
Drew: Dirk has somehow happened to hear from us and asked if he could get a few copies of our demos. Oddly, his colleague Ralph Guentzel had a few weeks earlier also already ordered from us demos. Dirk has always supported us wholeheartedly and was kind enough to make a new version for us and help promote across Europe. We hope to see him sometime soon meet in person and kill to twenty beer with him!
Daniel: Have you any plans for a full studio album? And it will then be available on vinyl and as a cassette version?
Drew: We already have plans for a full album. But we will first publish an EP, which will be completed at any moment ready. This EP is "Enter The Unknown" hot, contained four songs have cover artwork by Jowita Kaminska and hopefully appear in June or July. We even wrote half of the album completely. Looks like we'll probably take it in winter and in spring or summer 2012 release. If all goes well, both the album and the album will be released on vinyl, perhaps again as a cassette version. A CD is in two publications this time probably be inevitable, haha!
Daniel: Will we get the opportunity to see Midnite Hellion one day live in Germany?
Dan: I want but I hope so!
Drew: We really hope that we can come to Germany next year. We have already made a few contacts. But there is nothing in the bag. We would also love to play a European tour and a few festivals with you.
Daniel: Are there any recent U.S. metal bands that you can recommend?
Dan: Condition Critical is a great thrash metal band!
Drew: You must definitely check out Bröhammer! They are cool guys and great musicians who can write really good songs. Their singer, Joe Silver, has helped us out at a gig with Artillery, since our old singer had us unceremoniously abandoned.
Bill: Asphyxiating you should listen to you, if you're into death metal.
Daniel: What are your future plans with Midnite Hellion?
Dan: After completing the EP, let us see that we are playing a small tour to promote it. This is the next step.
Drew: We hope that we can make a complete tour of the U.S. and Europe as support for a larger band. We would do everything!
Daniel: OK, guys! The last words are yours!
Midnite Hellion: Thank you, Daniel, that You have not taken the time to conduct an interview with us! We appreciate your support very much! Thank you to all the people who supported us in any way. If singers are among you who are looking for a band, then please contact us on. Keep on rockin 'and rollin'!
